<p>The Barat Foundation is the premier French immersion, summer enrichment program for high school students.  Our program is located in the heart of the beautiful Luberon Valley in Provence, a short drive from where Peter Mayle wrote his best selling book, “A Year in Provence”.</p>
<p>We differ from most summer enrichment programs in several ways.  We are not a teen tour, but an intensive academic program dedicated to French language, culture and artistic immersion.</p>
<p>Our French language classes are small and focused, usually including 2 – 5 students and a native speaking French teacher dedicated to each student’s individual needs and progress.  We pride ourselves in having developed an extraordinary language program in which even beginners learn to order food in a café, enter shops without feeling self-conscious, ask for directions, and express basic needs in French.  Our more advanced students focus on listening and speaking skills, discussing everything from current events to contemporary art, both in and out of class with their French teachers, staff, and fellow students.  Advanced students also have the opportunity to read a French play in class, and then see it performed at the world famous Avignon theatre festival.</p>
<p>In addition to an intensive French language program, we offer a wide variety of artistic workshops to round out our academic program.  Each of our workshop teachers is a professional artist, with specific expertise in an artistic discipline including:  photography, computer art, visual arts, sculpture and installation art, fashion design, art history, performing arts, music, sound art, theatre, dance, and of course French cuisine.  These workshops have been created to encourage individual excellence, team building, and leadership skills.  Our award winning staff of professional artists bring their passion and commitment to teaching and sharing.  Students receive individual attention and encouragement.  As with our language classes, our art workshops are small and focused, allowing each student to grow to his or her maximum potential.</p>
<p>We travel as a group on excursions three to four times per week to visit the sites and monuments that have made Provence a world center for culture and art for over 2000 years. These excursions include horseback riding on the Camargue Nature Preserve, visits to Arles (Van Gogh’s beloved city), Avignon (center of the world’s largest and most prestigious theatre festival), Aix-en-Provence, Les Baux de Provence, Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, Vaison la Romaine, Gordes, Roussillon, Menerbes, Chateau-neuf du Pape, to mention a few.  Our students leave our program transformed.  They make remarkable progress with their French language skills, and moreover gain the invaluable experience of living in another culture with students from all over the world.
